‘Chimneys’ is a short film that follows the story of Jack and Alice, two childhood friends, on the night that Alice is leaving for America. The film explores the relationship between the two and the emotions that arise on the night of Alice’s departure.
As the Grand Canal features prominently throughout the film, I used the reflection of light on water as a metaphor for the protagonists’ relationship. Two lights drift melancholically back and forth across the screen, overlapping and dancing around each other and ultimately separate and drift off into the distance alone.
An accompanying DVD and poster were then designed to carry through the idea of separation.
